Life begins at 50!

A new project, 'Experience Counts', is helping mature workers from the Forestry industry to develop and improve their skills… for free!

Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based sector, are piloting the project for the Forestry industry and are looking to recruit learners from across Scotland Funded by the Scottish Executive and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the aim is to encourage older workers back into learning, increasing their confidence and improving their employment opportunities.

Following a Training Needs Analysis, delivered by a competent person from within the industry, learners create their own Personal Development Plan which will identify the learning that they wish to undertake. Learners can source the training they require as identified in their Personal Development Plan.

The delivery of training is also the choice of the learner; some may prefer face to face, others may prefer distance learning. The aim is to be flexible meeting the needs of the learner.

"This is a 2 year project looking at the preferred learning styles of older learners" said Lantra's Project Manager Morag Holdsworth. "We are looking to encourage mature workers into learning whether they want to learn new skills or refresh their existing skills. However to be able to encourage this important workforce sector to engage in learning we need to what barriers exist to prevent them from taking up training"

Hilary Parke, Lantra's Industry Partnership Manager for the Forestry industry said "Forestry is an important industry to across Scotland. This is a great opportunity for older workers to enhance their skills and boost productivity. "
