WOODLANDS FOR WALES STRATEGY REVIEW (01/09/08) Responding to the Consultation Briefing and Discussion, Forestry Commission Wales launched the consultation on the new draft WOODLANDS FOR WALES (the Welsh Assembly's strategy for woodland) at the Royal Welsh Show in July. The consultation will close on 14th October. ROYAL WELSH ATTRACTS 236,284 VISITORS (23/08/08) A near record attendance of 236,284 confirmed yet again the supremacy of the Royal Welsh Show as the biggest attraction of its kind in Britain. The success of the four-day event also demonstrated its resilience as it bounced back from the depressing results of the 2007 show, staged in the worst weather conditions for nearly 50 years and which produced a loss for the first time since 1974. FOREST HEALTH SEMINARS TO EXAMINE PESTS & DISEASES (07/08/08) Forestry Commission Wales and Forest Research are holding two one-day Forest Health seminars looking at some of the pests and diseases affecting trees and woodlands in Wales. WOODS CONSIDERED MOST CRIME-RIDDEN IN UK (16/06/08) Forests in South Wales play host to more criminal activity than woodland areas in any other part of the UK. ONE MAN'S MISSION TO FIND THE HIDDEN TREASURES OF THE MARCHES (09/06/08) Rob McBride, a volunteer for the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Hunt, is to walk the entire length of Offa’s Dyke in an attempt to discover and record as many ancient trees as he can along the remains of this 8th century embankment. ROUTE CHANGES PROPOSED FOR 2008 WALES RALLY GB (26/05/08) The organisers of the Wales Rally GB have proposed a revised route for this year’s event, which includes stages in the forests of mid Wales for the first time in eight years. FORESTRY ADVICE ON SHOW (20/05/08) Visitors to this year’s Smallholders Show at the Royal Welsh Showground on Saturday, 17 May, and Sunday, 18 May, will be able to get free forestry advice from Forestry Commission Wales staff.
